October Writing Prompts | Five-Sentence Writing
Take the “I don’t know what to write!” out of writing time with these fun, scaffolded October writing prompts!
This October Five-Sentence Writing resource includes 24 engaging writing prompts designed to help young writers turn their ideas into a complete piece of writing — one sentence at a time.
Rather than giving students a topic and expecting them to fill a blank page, each prompt provides five carefully chosen sentence starters that guide students through their writing while still leaving plenty of room for their own ideas and creativity.
Big ideas. Just five sentences!
Students aren't limited to narrative writing, either. Throughout the resource, they'll explore narrative, informative, opinion, personal, descriptive and imaginative writing, building confidence with different ways of organising and expressing their ideas.
What's included?
The 24 October writing prompts are inspired by seasonal topics, special days, international observances and Australian classroom connections.
October writing topics include:
International Coffee Day • World Smile Day • Taco Day • World Space Week • Fire Prevention Week • World Teachers' Day • Mad Hatter Day • World Mental Health Day • Indigenous Peoples' Day • Columbus Day • Dessert Day • Pasta Day • Nacho Day • Pumpkin Day • Chocolate Day • Candy Corn Day • Halloween • Halloween Costume Writing • World Animal Day • World Animal Day – US Spelling Version • Aussie Bird Count / Australian Birds • International Day of the Girl • United Nations Day • Children's Week • World Post Day
The resource moves from fun everyday topics such as designing the perfect taco and inventing a chocolate bar to imaginative narratives about space, pumpkins and Halloween.
It also incorporates meaningful opportunities to write about fire safety, teachers, mental health, Indigenous traditions, animals, Australian birds, children's rights and making the world a better place, giving students plenty of variety throughout the month.
Built-in support for developing writers
Each prompt provides five sentence starters, giving students a clear pathway through their writing rather than leaving them staring at a blank page.
Four writing-line options are included for every prompt, making it easy to choose the level of support that best suits your students' handwriting and writing needs.
Use these October writing prompts for daily writing, morning work, writing warm-ups, writing centres, literacy rotations, whole-class modelling, independent writing or fast finishers.
Project a prompt on your board and model a response together, co-construct a five-sentence piece as a class, or display the sentence starters while students complete their own independent writing.
For differentiation, encourage more confident writers to turn each sentence starter into two or more sentences, or use the five starters as paragraph starters for a longer piece.
Perfect for 1st Grade, 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade / Years 1–3, as well as reluctant or developing writers who benefit from additional structure.
Simply choose an October prompt, display the sentence starters and start writing!
