Take the “I don’t know what to write!” out of writing time with these fun, scaffolded September writing prompts!

This set of 24 September Five-Sentence Writing activities helps young writers turn their ideas into a complete piece of writing — one sentence at a time.

Rather than giving students a topic and expecting them to fill a blank page, each prompt provides five carefully chosen sentence starters that guide students through their writing while still leaving plenty of room for their own ideas and creativity.

Big ideas. Just five sentences!

Students aren’t limited to narrative writing, either. Throughout the resource, they’ll explore stories, explanations, opinions, recounts and other writing purposes, building confidence with different ways of organising and expressing their ideas.

What’s included?

You’ll receive 24 themed September writing prompts in an easy-to-display PowerPoint format, with engaging topics including:

World Letter-Writing Day • Cheese Pizza Day • Read-a-Book Day • Labor Day • Teddy Bear Day • Patriot Day • Chocolate Milkshake Day • Grandparents’ Day • Peanut Day • Cream-Filled Donut Day • Hispanic Heritage Month • Constitution Day • Cheeseburger Day • Talk Like a Pirate Day • Pepperoni Pizza Day • International Day of Peace • Punctuation Day • Johnny Appleseed Day • Pancake Day • Wattle Day • Indigenous Literacy Day • Father’s Day – Australia • Threatened Species Day • Save the Koala Day

The prompts offer plenty of variety. Students might write a book review for Read-a-Book Day, explore papel picado for Hispanic Heritage Month, create the perfect pizza, reflect on what peace means to them, write about an Australian threatened animal or share facts about koalas.

Four writing-line options are included for every prompt, so you can easily differentiate for different ages, handwriting abilities and writing needs.

Blank slides are also included so you can create your own prompts.

Designed to support developing writers

The five-sentence structure gives students a manageable starting point while helping them learn how ideas connect across a complete piece of writing.

You can project the slides on your board, model an example together, co-construct responses as a class and then display the sentence starters for independent writing. For differentiation, students can expand each starter into two sentences or even use the five prompts as paragraph starters for a longer piece.

Perfect for daily writing, writing warm-ups, morning work, literacy rotations, writing centres, whole-class modelling, independent writing and fast finishers.

Ideal for Grades 1–3 / Years 1–3, as well as reluctant writers, developing writers and students who benefit from additional writing scaffolds.
