Description

These CVC Word Picture Cards are a perfect ‘prep once – use forever’ resource.  Once printed on card stock and cut into tiles, you can use these colourful tiles to help reinforce phonics skills and support early reading development.

Here are a few ideas:

1. Word Mats: Lay out the picture cards in a grid or spread them out on a table. Then, have children complete a word mat with the  CVC word card. For example, if there is a picture of a cat, they would write the letters and word “cat.”

2. Sound Segmentation: Give a child a CVC word card and have them identify the individual sounds in the word. For instance, if the word card is “dog,” the child would say the sounds /d/ /o/ /g/. This activity helps build phonemic awareness.

3. Word Building: Provide children with a set of CVC word cards and a collection of magnetic letters. They can use the magnetic letters to build the corresponding CVC words. For example, if they have the word card “cat,” they would select the letters c, a, and t and arrange them to form the word.

4. Sentence Formation: Use CVC word picture cards to create simple sentences. Lay out several picture cards and ask children to select the ones they want to use. Then, they can arrange the cards in the correct order to form a sentence. Encourage them to read the sentence aloud.

5. Rhyming Words: Choose a CVC word picture card and have children find other CVC word cards that rhyme with the given word. For example, if the picture card is “cat,” they can look for word cards like “hat,” “mat,” or “sat.”

6. Memory Game: Create pairs of CVC word picture cards and lay them face down on a table. Children take turns flipping over two cards at a time, trying to find matching word-picture pairs. The game helps reinforce word-picture associations and memory skills.

7. Go Fish: Adapt the classic card game Go Fish using CVC word picture cards. Print two sets. Players ask each other for specific CVC words to make pairs. For example, “Do you have the card for ‘cat’?” If the player has the card, they hand it over. If not, they say, “Go fish!” and the turn moves to the next player.

Remember, these activities can be modified and expanded based on the level and abilities of the children you are working with.
